The Life I Always Dreamed Of
I was 34 years old and at my highest weight -- 315 lbs. In my mind I would live life as a "thin" person. When friends would be going out to places like amusement parks, I would stay home with the excuse that I didn't like the rides. In reality it was that I didn't fit in the seat, or the seatbelt could not close. My size was also a problem when going to a movie, or on an airplane, the seats just aren't made for heavy people. I also missed out on things like horseback riding, scuba diving, and parasailing. This was not the way I wanted to spend the rest of my life. It just wasn't healthy both physically and emotionally.
I Feel And Look Amazing
By the time I actually made an appointment and saw Dr. Gellman for the first time, I was 43 years old and at the highest weight of my life at 200 lbs. Besides being obese, my life was great; with a wonderful husband and 2 beautiful, healthy children. Unfortunately, I was not able to enjoy my life to the fullest, due to how horrible I felt most of the time. I literally had no energy, barely enough to get out of bed in the morning. I always felt sluggish and was unable to increase my activities because I was always out of breath. I was very self conscious and I had a very difficult time feeling comfortable in social situations. I started to become very anxious; I knew I needed a drastic change.
My life Is So Much Better
In April 2001, I was a single 28-year-old male weighing 360 lbs. and a size 50 waist. My life was horrible. I was getting older and bigger. I was starting to suffer significant co-morbidities (health problems due to morbid obesity) such as high blood pressure, severe sleep apnea and deteriorating knee cartilage. My general practitioner placed me on a blood pressure medication and I was committed to wearing a very cumbersome c-PAP machine to help me breathe at night while I slept. Through it all, I was watching friends and relatives meet girls and get married and I was left behind--a prisoner of my own body.
